Tea Retreat & Cultural Journeys in Rural Japan
Refined in stillness.
— Our Story
What is TeaScape?
TeaScape combines Tea, Escape, and Landscape — a quiet journey into the spirit of Japan. Rooted in the timeless satoyama landscapes, it is shaped by place, atmosphere, and local culture.
More than simply time spent in Japan, it is a gentle settling into slower rhythms of life. Through tea, rural life, and inherited traditions, softer ways of being naturally unfold.
Centered in
Aso, Kumamoto
At the heart of Kyushu, Japan’s southern main island, TeaScape draws inspiration from abundant spring water and the rich local culture it sustains.
Encircled by one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, Aso serves as a gateway to deeper immersion and wider journeys across Kyushu.
A Journey Through
the Five Elements
In Japanese Zen and Buddhist philosophy, all things arise from five elements — 「水」Water, 「地」Earth, 「火」Fire, 「風」Air, and 「空」Space.
In Aso, they are not abstract ideas, but living landscape. Each part of the TeaScape experience follows that path — from the volcanic source to the stillness in the tea bowl.
The source of tea
Aso’s volcanic layers filter rainwater over decades into spring water of exceptional clarity. From the spring source, we draw the water and brew tea with the very water that nourished the leaves.
Volcanic soil & grassland culture
The dark volcanic soil of Aso, renewed each year by the ancient practice of controlled burning, nourishes food and the groundwater beneath it. Our tea fields are cultivated without pesticides and sustained by compost from Akaushi cattle raised across the surrounding grasslands.
The kettle & the flame
Water only becomes tea through fire. Heat, timing, and attention transform the leaf into something alive. Different temperatures and flame reveal different expressions within the tea.
The wind & the aroma
Tea leaves are shaped, and given character by air and movement. In the cool winds of Aso’s highlands, the same air that surrounds you on the grassland walk finds its way into every cup.
Stillness between the elements
The fifth element is the space where the other four meet. The wide skies of Aso. Holding the tea bowl with both hands, quietly drinking tea. At TeaScape, we value these moments of stillness.
— Experiences
From Volcano
to Tea Bowl
Tea Brewing & Tasting
A quiet exploration of Japanese tea with Aso spring water. Taste green tea, matcha, hōjicha, and Japanese black tea (wakocha) while discovering how water and temperature reveal different expressions within the leaves — through aroma, texture, umami, and lingering finish.
Hand-rolled Tea
Experience the slow process of shaping tea leaves by hand, following traditional methods once found in everyday life. The tea you shape is later brewed and enjoyed together, paired with seasonal Japanese sweets.
Hōjicha & Genmaicha Roasting
As the leaves slowly roast over the flame, a deep, comforting aroma begins to fill the air. Hōjicha and genmaicha reveal how profoundly fire can transform tea — calming, yet quietly uplifting. An immersive encounter with the warmth and depth of traditional Japanese tea making.
Homemade Matcha Latte
Whisk matcha with Aso spring water and blend it with rich Jersey milk from the surrounding grasslands. Learn a simple preparation you can continue enjoying at home.
Matcha & Japanese Black Tea Ice Cream
Make your own ice cream using matcha and Japanese black tea (wakocha), blended with rich Jersey milk from the surrounding grasslands. A gentle dessert experience filled with the aroma of tea and the lingering richness of milk.
Handmade Miso
Using organic soybeans and local koji, make your own miso — a hands-on encounter with Japan’s fermented food culture. The miso is then enjoyed as soup and grilled rice balls, served alongside a traditional everyday meal.

— Custom Tour
Your journey,
your way.
Beyond our set experiences, journeys can be shaped around your group’s interests and schedule. Aso is our home, but Kumamoto and the surrounding area have much more to discover — from local food culture to quiet satoyama landscapes. Tea moments can also be woven naturally into each day of your journey upon request. While many visitors wish to enjoy matcha and Japanese tea throughout their travels, places where authentic Japanese tea can be enjoyed as casually as coffee are not always easy to find in rural areas.
