One Leaf, Five Expressions of Kyushu

A Sensory Journey Through Kyushu Teas in Minamiaso
October 18, 2026 | SOCKET, Minamiaso, Kumamoto

On October 18, TeaScape hosted a Japan Tea experience at SOCKET in Minamiaso, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Aso, Kumamoto.
Titled “One Leaf, Five Expressions of Kyushu,” the experience invited guests to discover the remarkable diversity of Japanese teas from Kyushu through their senses — exploring how different cultivars, processing methods, and brewing techniques create unique aromas, colors, and flavors.
One Plant, Endless Expressions
All true teas come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Yet each tea tells a different story, shaped by its cultivar, growing environment, processing methods, and the craftsmanship of its producers.
Even the way tea is brewed can transform its flavor, revealing different aromas, sweetness, and umami.
Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, is home to some of the country's most distinctive tea-producing regions.

During the tasting, guests explored five expressions of Kyushu tea:
- Yame Sencha (Fukuoka): Slowly extracted over ice to reveal its natural sweetness and rich umami.
- Chiran Sencha (Kagoshima): A steamed green tea representing the craftsmanship of southern Japan.
- Miyazaki Kamairicha: A traditional pan-fired green tea with a distinctive roasted, nutty aroma.
- Sunrouge (Kumamoto): A unique tea cultivar rich in anthocyanins, offering a fascinating color-changing experience.
- Wakocha (Minamiaso): Japanese black tea with gentle sweetness and a smooth, clean finish.
Rather than simply tasting different teas, guests were encouraged to observe, compare, and discover their own impressions.
There were no right or wrong answers — only curiosity and the pleasure of discovery.

Beyond the Teacup
The experience also introduced an innovative Aromatic Water, extracted directly from fresh tea leaves under vacuum conditions. Unlike conventional brewed tea, this unique water is obtained from the moisture naturally contained within the leaves, capturing their delicate aroma in an entirely different form.

To complement the tasting, guests enjoyed traditional Japanese wagashi, handcrafted sweets that reflect both the seasons and the creativity of Japanese confectionery artisans.
The colorful selection of namagashi featured a delightful variety of designs, from seasonal flowers and fruits to playful characters. Each piece was a small work of edible art, bringing another layer of discovery to the experience.
TeaScape can also arrange hands-on wagashi-making experiences, where guests can learn to create these beautiful traditional sweets with guidance from a local artisan.

Guests also enjoyed freshly charcoal-grilled dango, paired with TeaScape's original Koji Matcha Syrup, made with organic matcha and the natural sweetness of rice koji, without added refined sugar.
Together, these elements offered an opportunity to explore Japan Tea culture beyond the teacup — through aroma, texture, flavor, and craftsmanship.

Rooted in the Landscape of Aso
Surrounded by volcanic landscapes, abundant spring water, and rural traditions, Minamiaso offers a beautiful setting for exploring Japan Tea culture.
At TeaScape, we believe tea is more than a beverage. It is a gateway to understanding the relationship between nature, people, and place.
Through tea, we hope to introduce visitors to the quieter rhythms of rural Japan and the traditions that continue to shape everyday life.

The Beginning of TeaScape's Journey
This gathering marked one of the first steps in bringing TeaScape's vision to life.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tsunagaru Inc. for including TeaScape in their two-day, one-night tour of Beppu and Aso, giving us the opportunity to share the richness of Kyushu's tea culture with their guests.
We are also deeply grateful to everyone who joined us at SOCKET and shared their curiosity, enthusiasm, and thoughtful impressions.
As TeaScape continues to grow, we look forward to creating more immersive experiences connecting Japan Tea, local craftsmanship, food, and the landscapes of Kyushu.
